Basic Rigger · Banksman & Signalman

Rigger / Signalman Certification

Hands-on course for riggers and signallers: rigging safety rules, sling angles, hitch capacities, pre-use inspection, knots and standard hand signals.

About the course

This practical programme gives participants the knowledge and skills for safe rigging and signalling. It stresses rigging safety rules, sling angles and the use of sling capacity charts (uniform load method) for accurate load handling.

Participants learn hitch types, lifting accessories and rigging knots, together with hitch capacity calculations. The course also covers safe use and pre-use inspection of lifting equipment, control of boom deflection, manual handling, and personal and workplace safety.

By the end, participants can rig loads confidently and communicate clearly using standard hand signals.

Learning objectives

On completion, participants will be able to:

  • Apply a lifting operations procedure to the safe rigging of loads.
  • Apply rigging safety rules.
  • Use correct sling angles and calculate sling and hitch capacities by the uniform load method.
  • Select hitch configurations for different loads.
  • Recognise and correctly use lifting accessories and rigging equipment.
  • Carry out pre-use inspection of lifting gear and identify defects.
  • Use safe manual handling techniques.
  • Understand boom deflection and how to control load stability.
  • Tie and use the essential rigging knots.
  • Give clear standard hand signals to coordinate a lift.
