About the course
This course gives lifting supervisors the knowledge to plan and run rigging and lifting operations safely. It covers the main legislation and standards (LOLER and the relevant British Standards) and the golden rules of safe lifting.
Participants learn the roles and responsibilities in a lifting operation and how to identify and correctly use rigging equipment: hitch types, rigging gear selection and hand signals. Practical work covers safe load handling, pre-use inspection of slings and shackles and hitch capacity calculations.
Advanced topics include developing a lift plan, crane selection with load charts and range diagrams, exclusion zones, trial lifts and crane set-up. Weight estimation, centre of gravity, stability, cribbage (mat) size and D/d efficiency charts for slings are introduced, together with unsafe rigging practice and crane accident case studies.
The course ends with group rigging studies using scaled drawings and an introduction to CAD-based rigging plans.
Learning objectives
On completion, participants will be able to:
- Apply a lifting operations procedure to the planning and execution of lifts.
- Develop, review and implement lift plans for routine, simple and critical lifts.
- Act as rigging and lifting supervisor for routine, simple and critical lifting operations.
- Apply relevant legislation and standards (such as LOLER and BS 7121) and the golden rules of lifting to control risk.
- Identify the roles and responsibilities of everyone involved in a lift and coordinate them.
- Carry out calculations for hitch capacity, load weight estimation and centre of gravity.
Who should attend
- Lifting coordinators and supervisors
- Engineers and planners who prepare lift plans
- Experienced riggers moving into supervision
